"Back in the day, when I was growing up"
Sometimes you get tired of hearing these words...and now I find myself tired of uttering them to my own children! Dilema: Dylan wants to go to the movies with his friends - alone. I have no idea what the answer to the question is. Is that ok? Is it safe? I mean here we go, "back in the day", when I was growing up in Ireland, I remember being 12 and hitchhiking rides to the little town next to us, or to the beach, or taking a 3 mile walk to the closest corner store...and, "back in the day", it was perfectly normal - 20 years ago! No, my parents were not irrisponsible, it was just generally accepted to hitch a ride on the farmers tractor going snails pace down the cobblestone road. And, since when is it not acceptable for a 7th grader to go to the movies w/ his now high school friends he made while in 6th grade and they were in 8th?...are they now "unsafe" to hang around? Because "back in the day"" if you hung out with anyone older than you, you were deemed supervised. I don't know the answer, all I know is if Dylan asked me today if he could go to the movies with his highschool friends, the answer would not just be no, but HELLNO!
At what age do you say "in this day, it's ok" and why must today be so confusing?
